  1. 1535-1594. English navigator. He made his
  2. first voyage to Guinea, West Africa, 1554. In
  3. 1576 he set out in search of the Northwest
  4. Passage, and visited Labrador, and Frobisher
  5. Bay, Baffin Island. Second and third
  6. expeditions sailed 1577 and 1578. He was vice
  7. admiral in Drake's West Indian expedition
  8. 1585. In 1588, he was knighted for helping to
  9. defeat the Armada. He was mortally wounded
  10. 1594 fighting against the Spanish off the
  11. coast of France.
